The purpose of a business card website is to present your business or activity to the outside world by providing information about your organisation, products or services. This is usually a website with a limited number of pages which rarely change. There is little interaction with the visitors, except maybe for a contact form. The website might for instance include a blog. A high ranking in search engines may not be important.

E-commerce site, web shop

The purpose of an e-commerce website is to effectively promote your business on the Internet. This is achieved by presenting your entire catalog with (detailed) information about your products or services. In some cases the support of the buying process is limited to the selction process with the transaction itself is being handled via a different channel.

There is much interaction with the user. And therefore ease of use and navigation through the website are very important. We use Drupal and Ubercart/Commerce as web shop modules as these sites are quick to set up and offer the flexiblility needed. Getting the website just right is an iterative process working on fine-tuning and developing the content and requires more time, both during construction and afterwards. Fortunately with Drupal and Ubercart/Commerce this can largely be done via the website itself.

Community site

A community site is aimed at supporting a (virtual) community. For example, a group of people who share an interest. These sites often have a very open character. Content - text, photos, videos, etc. – are supplied by everyone and can then be viewed and commented upon by others in the community.

These sites tend to be highly interactive therefore ease of use is of great importance. Security is also a key issue, protecting user data and for dealing with inappropriate content. A high ranking in search engines is critical if new members are to be found. This is important because on the Internet often only the two major sites in a particular market will survive. Furthermore, income may well be dependent on visitor numbers rather than margin from product sales.
